A guide to buying an access platform

Access platforms can be used to complete any work that needs to be done at height, and there are many different types to choose from. Yet there are a few things you need to do before buying one: make sure you get the correct qualifications, carefully consider the type of platform you will need, and find an experienced company you can trust to provide you with a high quality machine. Here's a short guide to buying an access platform.

Become qualified to use an access platform

So that you can correctly and safely operate an access platform, you need to ensure you are fully trained and licensed at an accredited IPAF or PASMA training centre. The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) offer working at height training courses at Operator, Demonstrator and Instructor level, and after completing the course you will receive your Powered Access Licence (PAL) Card and Log Book. The Pre-fabricated Access Suppliers and Manufacturers Association (PASMA) offer courses for the use of Mobile Aluminium Scaffold Towers and PASMA Tower Equipment at User and Manager level. Upon completion, you will receive a PASMA card and PASMA certificate.

What type of access platform will you need?

You need to decide which access platform is most suitable for the type of work you will carry out. Will you be working on a vertical scale, or will you need to access hard to reach areas with ease? What is the maximum height you will need to reach? Are you going to be working indoors or outdoors? There are a vast number of access platforms to choose from, including cherry pickers, scissor lifts, electric hoists and more, so it's important to ensure that the one you buy is fit for purpose.
